HOTEL FIRE SAFETY
Like all buildings, hotels can have fires. Plan what to do when you check in. You won't have time to plan during a fire.
EXITS
- First, find two exists nearest your room. Be sure they are unlocked and unblocked.
- Then, count the doors between your room and exits, so you'll have a reference point if they are smoky.
ALARMS
- When you hear an alarm, act, don't investigate.
FIRE
- If the fire is in your room, get out and close the door. Once out, report the fire.
- If the fire is not in your room, leave if you can. First, feel your door. If it's cool, open it slowly and go to the nearest exit. Crawl in smoke. Fresh air will be at the floor. Take your key so you can go back if you can't use the exits.
- Never use elevators during a fire. They could stop at the fire floor.
- If your room door is hot, don't open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Signal at your window. Call the fire department and wait to be rescued.

About the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel
About the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel
~ About the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel ~
The Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and Victoria's Restaurant are privately owned, operated and managed by the Zerby family.
The hotel and restaurant are located on a piece of property that was once occupied by the Shirl Ann Motel, which had been in the Zerby family since the late 1950s. The Zerby-Meade family had a dream to build a Victorian-style property that provided its guests with the service and atmosphere of a bygone era coupled with modern-day amenities. After years of planning, they closed the Shirl Ann Motel and built the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. The property was completed and opened its doors to the public for the first time in late May, 1991.
When the hotel opened, the owners concerned themselves with providing a level of service that matched the award-winning design and décor. In 1992, the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel received the prestigious Four Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association, which signifies to the traveling public that the staff of the hotel and restaurant provides a level of service that exceeds a guest's expectations. The hotel has won this award consecutively each year through 2018. The hotel and restaurant celebrated 25 years of business in 2016.

The Origins of Rehoboth Beach
The Origins of Rehoboth Beach
~ The Origins of Rehoboth Beach ~
by: Warren H. MacDonald
Courtesy of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society
Today's City of Rehoboth Beach traces its beginnings as a municipality to March 19, 1891, when the Delaware General Assembly issued a new charter stating: "The purpose of said incorporation is the providing and maintaining of a permanent seaside resort, and to furnish the necessary and proper conveniences and attractions required to the success of the same."
The City's actual origins as a seaside resort go back to January 27, 1873, when "The Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church" was founded here to provide for summer religious gatherings. Using that name, and led by Reverend Robert Todd, thirty incorporators secured a Charter from the State Legislature to create a "Christian sea-side resort." Their plan was to encourage interested persons to take advantage of the seaside atmosphere and to fund the enterprise through sales of shares and property.
The Reverend Todd and his associated chose "Rehoboth Beach" as the name of their Camp Meeting Grounds. The source for this name is the Bible (Gen. 26:22); in early Hebrew, Rehoboth means "broad places." English explorers had given this name to nearby Rehoboth Bay in the 17th Century, no doubt in appreciation of its beautiful, broad expanse.
That same year, 1873, the Camp Meeting Association oversaw the construction of its religious Encampment Grounds and several small wooden structures known as "Tents", such as the one on Christian Street which now serves as the museum of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. A Post Office was also established, the first of several hotels was built, and the original Rehoboth Boardwalk was constructed - eight feet wide and 1,000 yards long!
In 1878, the railroad was extended from Lewes to Rehoboth Beach, bringing more and more visitors to the City. Soon the seaside resort aspects overshadowed the Association's religious orientation and activities. In 1879 the name of the enterprise was shortened to "The Rehoboth Beach Association," and by 1881 the annual religious camp meetings were discontinued. New managers continued promoting investment in property and gave increased encouragement to resort-style facilities and entertainments. Although the number of permanent residents remained small, concerned business leaders, some of the Association's directors, now saw the need for a more conventional government. This led to the March 1891 action of the Delaware Legislature, revoking the 1873 Charter and its amendments and creating a municipal government under control of a Board of Commissioners.
The 1891 Charter gave the municipality a completely new name: Cape Henlopen City. The name was unpopular from the beginning. So, in 1893, the Legislature changed the name to, simply: Rehoboth. And, in 1937, the official name was changed again to its present form: The City of Rehoboth Beach.
Throughout its more than 100 years, Rehoboth Beach has remained proud of its religious beginnings and its family oriented atmosphere. Generous, regular attention has to be given to continuous fulfillment of the original purpose of the municipality: the furnishing of proper conveniences and attractions for the maintenance of a successful seaside resort.
